Improving Your Quality of Life with Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise that focuses on using deep core muscles to stabilize and strengthen the body from within. The science behind the movement is recognized by physicians, physical therapists and enthusiasts who value its lasting and profound effects in helping to safely and effectively improve movement and to look and feel better.
How Pilates was developed...
Pilates is named after its founder, Joseph Pilates (1880 - 1967), who developed exercises that combined balance, strength and conditioning. His methods were so effective they caught the attention of dancers, athletes and physical fitness enthusiasts. Joseph slowly unrolled his method of movement to many people who saw the value of core strengthening and conditioning.
Over 80 years later, this profound type of exercise is being practiced all over the world, and helping many people improve their fitness, quality of life, and appearance.
Why Physical Therapy and Pilates work well together:
Physical therapists specialize in musculoskeletal function. Pilates based exercise works well with physical therapy because of its attention to form, specificity of muscle use and mind body awareness. Specialized equipment such as the Reformer and Cadillac allow for training of various movement patterns and postural alignment. When using the principles of Pilates, one can expect:
- Improved Core Strength (Trunk Muscles)
- Improved Flexibility
- Lean Muscle Development
- Improved Posture
- Back Pain Relief
- Injury Prevention
- Greater Ease of Movement
Enjoy the benefits of looking and feeling better!
Pilates programs at Wilshire-Linden Physical Therapy are conducted under the direction of physical therapists. Each client will be evaluated by a physical therapist to determine their individual strength, mobility and postural needs. Their progress will be tracked through the use of standardized tests for ease in communication with their referring physician if needed.
The critical importance of FORM in Pilates:
Proper form in movement guarantees that our physical work will be executed properly. In Pilates, all movement involves the core muscles in some way (either through stabilization or mobility). If we are aligned properly and use correct form, we know that our muscles and connecting tissues are being used optimally. We can expect to develop greater strength, muscular balance and flexibility when we are positioned correctly. Form is our insurance that our movement outcomes will be successful.
Pilates at Wilshire Linden Physical Therapy:
- One-on-one sessions (55 min. and 30 min.)
- Duet sessions (55 min.) - partners need to be of same ability/level
- Group classes (max of 3 participants)
- Reformer - Mat - Cardio and pilates (55 min.)
- 25 minutes of self-directed cardio exercise (treadmill, bike, elliptical) - 30 minutes of one-on-one Pilates

Why should I consider taking Pilates?
Pilates can help each and every person move with greater efficiency, strength and general ease. Since the spine is the powerhouse of our bodies, all of the core muscles that surround the torso/spine area are integral to our movement abilities. When one has strength, balance and flexibility in the core muscles, the movement patterns of legs and arms are more efficient and the body has greater musculoskeletal integrity.
Medically-based Pilates:
